At Gryfe's, we stay true to the tradition and recipe we inherited. Each day, we rise early, mix our dough, carefully shape our bagels, then boil, seed, and finally bake. From Poppy to Whole Wheat, Everything to Cinnamon-Sugar, Flats to Sesame, we offer a wide variety of bagels as well as classic pastries such as blueberry buns, our must-have chocolate chip cookies, and classic pizza bagels—the perfect snack for children (and former children).
Gryfe's Bagels would not be possible without our dedicated staff and devoted customers. We take pride in being an active member of our community and are always looking for new ways to be involved and give back.Our flagship store has recently undergone a renovation. As a pillar of the community, we’re ready to welcome bagel lovers for years to come.
Shlome Graif immigrated from Romania to Hamilton, Ontario in 1910. After various jobs, he returned to his original trade from the old country—baking. In 1915, Shlome (now Sam) opened S. Gryfe Bakery in Hamilton.
Over the next couple of years, Sam reunited with his siblings in Toronto and continued his work as a baker. By 1930, as his children began working with him, Sam proudly named the company 'S. Gryfe & Sons Bakery'.
Eventually, Sam's children left the family business to find their own independence, as their father did. In 1957, after working in other bakeries, Sam's second-born son Art and his wife Ruth acquired Esther Sky's Bakery. There, they would create the Toronto-famous Gryfe's bagel and establish the official (and only) flagship location for Gryfe's Bagel Bakery.
